Welcome to our web site! NEWS Updates! Spectacle Pond Association Completes Third and Final Phase of Preservation Project! See below for more information!
Spectacle Pond Preservation Project Complete! We are very pleased to announce that the Spectacle Pond Preservation Project is complete! Work on the third and final phase of the project, reconstruction of the dike, was completed by Andrews Construction Company, Inc. on November 23, 2011. The new dike was constructed in accordance with plans prepared by Dubois & King and approved by the NHDES Dam Bureau. The dike is constructed of stone and earth and it’s designed to be overtopped if there is rainfall that exceeds a 100 year flood. It provides enough discharge capacity to meet 2 ½ times the hundred year flood requirement established by the NHDES. The dike has a 12” diameter low level discharge pipe with a valve that can be opened if it’s ever necessary to lower the water level of the pond. Reconstruction of the dike eliminates the threat to the pond caused by the rapid deterioration of the old dike. Water leaks have been eliminated and the water level of the pond will be stabilized at the optimal level. Completion of the Spectacle Pond Preservation Project ensures that this valuable natural resource will be preserved for future generations. THANK YOU to everyone who donated to the project and made it possible to preserve Spectacle Pond! Please click on our “Newsletter” button to see more information in our latest newsletter. UPDATE 1/30/12 - The State of New Hampshire DES has determined that the dam, dike and spillway construction was completed in accordance with the approved plans and specifications. On January 26, 2012 the NHDES issued a "Certificate of Approval to Impound Water". This certifies that the Spectacle Pond Project is officially complete per NHDES regulations and gives SPA permission to close the 12" diameter valve in the dike and start refilling the pond. The valve was closed on Saturday 1/28/12. We believe the pond will be at it's normal level by this spring. Please click on the attached link to see the "Certificate of Approval to Impound Water."
